Hmmm, I tried
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts# mkfontdir *
which lead to
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts# ls -l 100dpi/fonts.* 75dpi/fonts.* misc/fonts.*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3302 Jan 17 08:10 100dpi/fonts.alias
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 15926 Jan 19 08:40 100dpi/fonts.dir
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3212 Jan 17 07:39 75dpi/fonts.alias
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 15430 Jan 19 08:40 75dpi/fonts.dir
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10429 Jan 17 07:42 misc/fonts.alias
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7345 Jan 19 08:40 misc/fonts.dir
(On Jan 17 I did the update of Emacs20 and XFree-3.3.6 packages.)

This situation remained unchanged :-(((.
So I searched for the possibly missing thing and hope that somebody
would have a clue what's wrong here. I really think this is a matter
for a bug report because it breaks the system but I want to ship
useful information to the maintainer. Unfortunately I'm not familiar
with this stuff.
