Not only does it work fine, but even in heterogeneous environments with
Sun Solaris and Debian machines (both sparc and i386) - perfectly fine.

Exactly and it is seamlessly integrated with nsswitch.conf lookups.
However, it *is* limited to files that have lookup keys available -
e.g., passwd works fine but init.d scripts probably can't use this.
I don't know LDAP and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong,
but isn't it possible to set up LDAP to fill this role as well?
