 I removed the symlink... I don't know how long it's been there, nor
 do I recall whether I created it myself at some point, or it was
 installed there for me.  I ran a grep for /var/lib\|/var/state on all
 the *.list files, and moved everything that belonged in /var/state.

 I wonder if there are other machines out there with the same problem?
