About lightflow license

I just read the LightFlow Rendering Interface license. And I have a problem,
I didn't know it is possible to copyright APIs. Is that legal?

-------
The Lightflow Rendering Interface is a complete and well-developed
object-oriented interface for developing other three dimensional visualization
 applications.

The Lightflow Rendering Interface, including all the classes, structures and
procedures which constitute the interface, and all the relative documentation,
 is:

Copyright (c) 1995-1999 by Jacopo Pantaleoni. All Rights Reserved.
--------

BTW, IMHO, it would be impossible to have LF in debian. The author wants
to make a lot of money out of it as the actual 30-days-trial license shows.

ciao,
federico
