In most cases you need a second box or a chroot environment with a
full stable developement environment. Witness glibc2 <-> glibc2.1;
perl <-> perl5.

But if someone wants to do this, a central place would indeed be nice, 
so the user don't have to hunt the packages (if they hear about them
at all).

Stephane's list is another way to do this (although a place on the
Debian ftp has the benefit of being mirrored). BTW: how about a link
from www.debian.org to Stephane's list?
