   normed, aren't they?

They should be, but the individual packages appear to use slightly
different filesystem structures:

usr/lib/R/afm/AvantB					math/r-base
usr/lib/enscript/AvantGarde-Book.afm			text/enscript
usr/lib/ghostscript/fonts/a010013l.afm			text/gsfonts
usr/lib/texmf/fonts/afm/adobe/avantgar/pagd8a.afm	tex/tetex-extra
usr/share/a2ps/afm/pbkd.afm				text/a2ps

I wonder if we can get these programs to agree on a common layout.  It
would certainly make it easier to use new fonts in all of them!
			 
			 Are they 'free' so can we create a afm-common package
   that R, TeX, a2ps, enscript, ghostscript depend upon?

They appear to be free.  Adobe's downloadables license on the web
appears to allow redistribution & modification, although the license
inside the files themselves says ``All Rights Reserved.''  Maybe we
should talk to Adobe about this?
