I got around this by treating all the printers as local, and having
the filter (hpfilter, a commerical program that amongst other things
allows me to select input/output trays, resoultion, duplex options,
etc) print directly to the printer. And it gets decent page counts.

My biggest thorn with debian lpr is that (and rlogind/rshd suffer from
the same problem) is that they don't recognize netgroups in
/etc/hosts.lpd, so I have to manually add entries to /etc/hosts.lpd
every time I add a new computer to the net.
