Sorry.  You just sounded to me like you needed that - which I now see
was a false idea.

Hmm.  I just tested that with lilo, and it seems you're right.
However, in my packages, .orig.tar and upstream .tar are identical,
and that hasn't been a problem with lintian, nor have I seen anything
in the docs forbidding this.  dpkg-source -x will rename the directory
on unpack, if necessary - and with malaga it is, so I've actually seen
this.

So, unless somebody says I'm wrong, you can go ahead and use identical
tarballs.
