dpkg: assertion failure -- what does this mean?

dpkg won't install a alsa-modules package I just created. Does
anyone know offhand what dpkg is telling me?

  $ sudo dpkg -i alsa-modules-2.1.125_0.2.0-pre8-2+raven.1.0_i386.deb
  (Reading database ... 86784 files and directories currently installed.)
  Preparing to replace alsa-modules-2.1.125 0.2.0-pre8-2+raven.1.0 (using alsa-modules-2.1.125_0.2.0-pre8-2+raven.1.0_i386.deb) ...
  Unpacking replacement alsa-modules-2.1.125 ...
  dpkg: ../../../dpkg/packages.c:191: process_queue: Assertion `dependtry <= 4' failed.
