I'm kind of curious why bash is not running your .bash files.

Hmm... I kind of left that out didn't I.  It's not debian, I'm hoping
it's not a debian specific problem.  

Client: SSH Version 1.2.26 [sparc-sun-solaris2.5.1], protocol version 1.5.
Server: SSH Version 1.2.26 [i686-unknown-linux], protocol version 1.5.

I can try to verify it's not a debian problem later tonight,
