rplay can use mpg123, as well as other sound utilities, as helper apps.
you can play an mp3 file at the same time you're playing a mod file and
rplay will mix them together for you.  (why you'd want to do that i don't
know. :) a better example would be that you could play an mp3 (or mod, or
whatever) file at the same time you were playing xpilot and rplay would
mix the sounds together.

uh, well, um yes, that should have been "xmp" not "xpm."  that's been
fixed.
