Hmm, I'm not sure what's best, but I'd like to stick with the upstream
version (rather than one unbundled from another package), so I think
the diffs against 4.13alpha1 might be best.
In the end I'd like to see the whole thing changed to use libtool
(assuming that there aren't some nasties in libtool I don't know
about).
The threading stuff sounds good too.
