There are precedents set by the f2c and xgobi packages which also come from
AT&T Labs (Lucent, Belllabs, whathaveyou) which would suggest that a YYYYMMDD
version number based on the (file-)dates in the source ftp tree is
appropriate. 

As for the name, I'd use oawk for original awk. Or kawk.
