Obsolete/local packages

I have several packages installed that are listed as obsolete/local
and that are not in project/orphaned (so presumably aren't related to
the recent freeze). Most of these have accumulated over the last 6+
months as I stayed up to date with unstable. Now I need to know what
to do to "fix" them. Now seems as good a time as any.

Orphaned/local:

base
ren
npasswd_boulder
gimp-plugins
libpcap0
libg++27-altdev
xcompat
adpkg

I can think of a couple possibilities for each:

1. choose remove/purge in dselect
   a) because dpkg won't remove files from the package that are also
in other packages? ie. gimp-plugins, npasswd?
   b) because the package really isn't needed/relevant anymore

2. edit status by hand to remove the packages from dpkg's brain (maybe
because the files in this package really are essential but the package
   is irrelevant, ie. base, adpkg?)

3. wait some short period of time becuase the package will return

4. something else?

What's your advice?
