Well, that's what the <-- == DEL proposal wants to have, too.

What "funky behaviour"?
In my VCs, <-- gives DEL and destructively moves the cursor to the left.
Under DOS, <-- gives BS and destructively moves the cursor to the left.
Where is the problem?
