Um, how does a normal user find out what the <--- key is generating on a well set up system?

As long as the character to the left of the cursor disapears, they are unlikely to know or care what is actually being generated by the keypress.

BTW I'd be interested to hear any justification of why <--- == DEL makes life difficult for internationalisation.  If this is a reality, it might be the first bit of weighty justification for the BS setting.
