... And preferably the question of it's installation should be taken care of
when 'installing the installation program' (ie the base disks)

(pseudo code follows)
print "Do you want to have this system installed like a:"
option "Server"               // Install _EVERYTHING_!!!
option "Standalone, user" // Don't install any devel etc...
option "Standalone, devel" // Install gcc/binutils/java etc...
option "Netbooted" // Install only the absolute nessesary...
if OPTION == NC; then
  // whatever...
else if
  // whatever...
else
  // whatever...
fi
(pseudo code ends)

Something like that...

The different option's should then install an apropriate '/var/lib/dpkg/status'
file... One thing which irritate me every time I do an installation is the
Debian defaults... I _ALWAYS_ have to go in there an change everything...

I very often installs 'server Debian' and 'devel Debian'... For those who are
really serious about using Debin/Linux, and have plenty of space, and for those
who want to use Debian as there second OS, but don't want to have a lot of
'server thingies' (like web/mail/news servers etc)...
