I think the problem here isn't last, but another binary that is  screwing
up your utmp file. For me, old versions of rxvt to a good job of
making my utmp file unreadable, and I think ssh used to do that
too.

Anyway, my last is libc5 too, and I don't have (at the moment, at least)
the problems you report (while I have quite a lot of libc6 stuff installed).
