I don't think your problem is symlinks.  I think you'll have to upgrade
your dpkg-ftp.  Read on.

Here's the culprit.  The filenames in the Packages file are relative to
"/debian", not "/debian/hamm".  Thus your dpkg-ftp was looking for
/debian/hamm/dists/unstable/... instead of /debian/dists/unstable/...
You need to specify:

  Enter debian directory: /debian

  Enter space seperated list of distributions to get
  []: dists/unstable/main dists/unstable/contrib dists/unstable/non-free

Unfortunately, this won't work with dpkg-ftp 1.4.8, which is the one in
stable, due to bugs.  You'll have to install 1.4.9 by hand; get it from:
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/hamm/hamm/binary-i386/base/dpkg-ftp_1.4.9.deb

dpkg-ftp 1.4.9 really ought to go into the next patch to stable, so
that at least -some- people will be able to upgrade hamm without having
to grub around manually with dpkg.
