Turns out that qmail's problem was my fault (I didn't compile my local
checkpassword with the right flags). Proftpd, on the other hand,
appears to need some help (both with passwords and some other things).
I sent several messages to the proftpd maintainer, but didn't hear
anything back. I wonder if he's still around...
