The GIMP 0.99.10 Debian Package is Released!

Phew! This one took a long time! :) Here's a nice humungous release
info sheet sort of thing. I've been working on this one for about a
month non-stop.

The GIMP 0.99.10 is now available for Debian GNU/Linux
(http://www.debian.org/) in packaged format!

Ben Gertzfield, the new maintainer of The GIMP for Debian, has created
a set of .deb packages to ease the installation, upgrades, and
maintainance of that awesome gimpy program we all know and love.

The main source packages have been made into 6 packages -- gimp,
gimp-data, libgtk1, gimp-dev, libgtk-dev, and gimp-nonfree. Most users
will only need gimp, gimp-data, and libgtk1.

gimp-dev and libgtk-dev are for those adventurous souls who wish to
compile their own plug-ins, or develop gzilla, perhaps.

gimp-nonfree contains the gif and tiff plug-ins, which use the
proprietary and patented LZW compression method, and unfortunately
cannot be included in any GNU or GPL'd binary
package. http://www.unisys.com/ has more information about their LZW
patent. Use gimp-nonfree at your own legal discretion.

These packages can be installed with the dpkg utility that comes with
Debian; simply download them all from
http://www.aca.imsa.edu/~che/debian/gimp/ (or wait until they're
distributed with the rest of Debian), stick 'em in a directory, and
run 'dpkg -i *.deb' in that directory.

These packages are for the pending release of Debian 2.0, and thus are
built using a few libraries you may not have on your Debian 1.3
system. These GIMP .deb packages depend on (and won't be very useful
unless you have) libc6, which can be retrieved from your local Debian
mirror, in the unstable/binary/base directory. The 'sharefont' and
'freefont' packages are quite useful, as well, for running all those
nifty Script-Fu functions that make GIMP so cool.

And from this point on, whenever a new version of GIMP comes out, you
can just grab the new gimp .deb (no need to get gimp-data or libgtk1
-- those don't change very much! Tiny little transfers and no
compiling at all!) and dpkg -i it, and voila! Instant new version.

Any bugs (erm, undocumented features!) in these packages should be
directed to Ben Gertzfield (che@imsa.edu).
