dpkg-buildpackage: pgp: Signature error

Anyone knows why pgp suddenly looks for the root signature file?

rulcmc:/home/joost/maintain/menu/menu-1.2$ echo $USER
rulcmc:/home/joost/maintain/menu/menu-1.2$ su root

[building package, everything goes well]

chown -R root.root debian/tmp
chmod -R g-ws debian/tmp
dpkg --build debian/tmp ..
dpkg-deb: building package `menu' in `../menu_1.2_i386.deb'.
