Correct arch specs for configure...
In recompiling a bunch of software for the alpha, I've gotten to
observe the various idiosyncracies of numerous maintainers, and among
other things this has led me to this question: What is the proper
architecture for us to specify to configure?
I had always assumed it would be {alpha,i386,m68k}-debian-linux, since
this more-or-less satisfies the architecture/vendor/os trio (like
sparc-sun-solaris2, for instance).
However, I note that an awful lot of packages (ok, a few, but it seems
like a lot) merely specify alpha-linux.
Although, as I suggested above, arch-debian-linux strikes me as the
"right" thing to do, I don't have a real stake in the answer to this
question, I would only ask that we be consistent.
Could someone with the mandate to decide these things please do so and
see that it gets in the policy manual?
Mike.
