You could use procmail or deliver to do the delivery into the user mailbox,
calling them via qsmhook. Changing the default line in conf-unusual.h lets you
do that. The advantage is that you get both dot-locking and delivery into
mailboxes in /var/spool/mail, so all clients, including pop servers, keep
working. Users who want to use maildir have to use .qmail* files anyway, so
the loss compared to the default configuration of qmail seems tolerable. Until
there are enough qmail-savvy clients around, this looks like a reasonable
compromise to me.
