I can never tell what picture is on a 16x16. Maybe I need a lower
resolution, or better glasses :-)

So we have a total of 4 icon files for every item on the menus? Isn't this 
getting excessive? 

Granted, it would look better in 16bpp. But you can really reduce icons to
the colormap without much loss in quality. I've been reducing all the icons
in my menus to the colormap, and I haven't noticed a difference with most of
them (a few had to be hand-edited to look good).
