what's up is that basically, install-mime sucks for people actually
keeping up with changing packages, and that imagemagick had a
half-baked workaround for the problem, but the mime-support maintainer
correctly pointed out that it was half-baked. I think this means that
your choices are
1) do what imagemagick does and then fix it again later when
install-mime can handle upgrades gracefully
2) do what you're doing now and then fix it later when
install-mime can handle upgrades gracefully.
The particular annoying behavior is that when an upgrade happens, the
prerm takes *all* of the entries for the package out of mailcap, and
then has to put them back, which means prompting the user all over
again [for information they've *already* completely specified...]
