Give him (and us) a break! This is the standard behaviour of _every_ Debian
package dealing with daemons. Just look at the many *.{pre,post}{inst,rm}
file in /var/lib/dpkg/info; and/or consider our fine start-stop-daemon(8).
If you want to continue to run pppd, why do you choose [U]pgrade? If you
upgrade your TV, you also turn it off before you bring it back to the dealer,
no?
