Bug#5014: diald won't do what I want

Yes I did, but decided that it would be better to handle this through
the debian bugs mechanism. I've got enough other projects going that
I'd rather not get into either de-installing debian diald, installing
my own (temporary) local copy of diald, nor patching the debian
sources to align with an updated source provided by Eric.
This is an annoyance for me, not a showstopper. I'm happy to deal
with this within the bounds of the usual debian package maintenance
procedures.
