Bug#4785: Installation fails to initialize module dependencies

Package: installation scripts
Version: Debian 1.1 (iConnect Oct 6 release)

The installation scripts failed to execute depmod to create module
dependencies requiring that I exit the install process and execute it
manually before attempting to run dselect. Module command arguments were
not passed on to the modules.

I am using Debian from iConnect dated Oct 6, boot_2.0.18_9.bin from
SpecialKernels (how is one supposed to know the difference between the 10
boot disk images in this directory!!???) as required to support my Adaptec
AHA2842 SCSI VLB card, the base14 series of base filesystem disks and the
root.bin root disk image, all dated 16 June 1996.

I was recommended to the Debian distribution by reviews in the Linux Journal
and pushed in the direction of change by lack of support for my current
distribution (Slackware), however I have been trying unsuccessfully to get
Debian installed for nearly 6 hours. I am no stranger to Linux as I run a
small online service on a well-configured Linux box (Slackware 3 manually
upgraded to Linux 2.0.22).
Between the very buggy Debian installation process (this is my 3rd serious
bug report involving installation) and a serious lack of proper
documentation, I'm about to give up and move on over to looking at Red Hat
4. While I applaud the Debian development team's commitments to an open
development program, the term "designed by committee" unfortunately appears
to apply to this distribution. The apparent lack of integration is sad
considering that the distribution is based on some very good ideas and
principles.
