Bug#3146: 1.1 installation: ae doesn't work

After completely installing the base disks of the 1996_5_21
distribution, (and rebooting from a freshly created floppy if that
matters,) I found that 'ae' behaved in a very strange way.
First, it didn't echo the characters typed in untill the carriage return
was typed, and then it showed all the characters in the reverse order.
Also the function keys didn't work, but F1 followed by a CR produced
A[[
on the screen (F2 produces B[[, and so on).
The arrows don't work, only arrow down inserts a new line.
I checked that the TERM variable was correct (linux).
I really don't understand what could be going on; could someone please
verify this?
