Thanks for the bug report.  I'll leave it open for now, but this is
currently suspected as an ncurses bug.

>     ncurses-bin 1.9.9e-1
>     ncurses3.0 1.9.9e-1

The ae editor worked OK with the 1.9.8a version of these packages.
