Status of libgr vs. other graphics libs (gimp dependencies).

I recall a discussion about killing libgr in favor of individual
graphics libs.  I'm may be getting a new GIMP release together to fix
a bug, and I was wondering what the status of this issue was.

(BTW There's also a new version of GIMP coming soon.  The new features
look pretty interesting:

-- antialiasing
-- layers with transparencies
-- sub-pixel sampling for brush effects
-- new selection methods
-- new "arbitrary perspective transform tool"
-- etc.)
