Hmm ... how about umsdos?  It's quite feasible to run a whole Linux
system off a single DOS partition using umsdos, and in fact I know of
some such systems in our College.  I'd hate to think that this can be done
with Slackware &c but not with Debian :-( ... presumably a module
wouldn't be good enough if the root filesystem was umsdos ...
