Bug#2449: syslogd stops logging to VC

Package: syslogd
Version: 1.2-19

I have the following line in my syslog.conf:

kern.*;user.*;local2.*;auth.*;daemon.*;mail.*;news.crit;news.err;news.notice;*.=debug;*.=info;*.=notice;*.=warn;cron.none	/dev/tty8

This works fine most of the time. However, for some bizarre reason
syslogd stops logging to tty8 during my overnight backup run.

It could be that this isn't syslogd's fault (it could perhaps be some
very bizarre kernel bug), but since syslogd isn't producing a
diagnostic anywhere that I could find I have to assume it's its fault.

If you like, please consider this bug report to be a complaint about
syslogd's failure to log any messages about its failure to log other
kinds of messages (obviously when this is fixed it'll be necessary to
ensure that it doesn't run away if things get really bad and it can't
log the failure).

Ian.
