This leads to something that occurred to me earlier - to make it easier to
grab new versions of packages, Ian should be collecting source code
packages just as they were distributed, and patch files to fix up path
names, configure for Debian etc, then add or change the install rules in
the top level makefile so that it does the Debian thing. This will keep 
Debian changes to source distinct from the source as distributed, thereby 
making it easier to update, and will allow contributions to be uploaded 
by contibutors with limited bandwidth.
