Absolutely. Nevertheless thanks for being one of the project's drivers.

I think free software games don't need to compete commercially with
other games and most ones don't even want to. Most FOSS games are
developed by one, rarely by two or more developers in their free time.
So the comparison is a bit flawed because commercial game developers can
work full-time or they have the financial backing of a larger games
company. There is simply no chance that you can develop games like DOTA2
or World of Warcraft in your spare time.

So making a game really successful boils down to money, time and
resources but not necessarily to free versus proprietary software.
Caveexpress is one example of a successful commercial FOSS game. Source
code was released under GPL-3 while the initial game content was
non-free to ensure the developer would be rewarded for his efforts and
so that others wouldn't cash in immediately. However a few months later
all the artwork was freed as well. I think that is a viable business
model for FOSS games.

Now, let me get back to what this has to do with g-d-p and how we can
promote it. I think it would be interesting to know why there is a free
contrib-engine X without free artwork. Some background information about
the game and the community, comparisons to other FOSS games and links
might spice everything up and would make g-d-p more visible on the web.

A blend could be just the metapackage(s) and a homepage. A live-image
would be nice to have but it is surely not mandatory. As you already
said, one must be careful because this might lead to problems due to
license restrictions. A nice feature of the blends approach is that you
get a homepage like http://blends.debian.org/games/tasks/finest for free
by just declaring a few packages in your task file. Of course the design
could be improved but you also have the opportunity to combine your HTML
page for g-d-p with automatically generated blends pages. I think this
would be one way to promote game-data-packager.
