I agree with AssaultCube deserve more love. Thank you.

AssaultCube is maintained by the Debian Games Team. An NMU in this case
doesn't really make sense. If you want to take care of the package. I
suggest you
to join the team.
First create an account on http://alioth.debian.org/, register you ssh
key and then
do a request to join the pkg-games team.
The packages is here:
svn+ssh://svn.debian.org/svn/pkg-games/non-free/packages/trunk/assaultcube
svn+ssh://svn.debian.org/svn/pkg-games/non-free/packages/trunk/assaultcube-data

Once the package is ready and if you need a sponsor, you can add it in
