Request for comments/help: quake2

Hi folks,

I was working on trying to fix up quake2 so it doesn't get removed.  
However I'm running in to a few issues I am having problems resolving.  
If anyone could help out I'd appreciate it.

Here are the the lintian errors/warnings I'm struggling with:

I've added CFLAGS += -fPIC -DPIC to rules but that didn't help and it 
doesn't appear to be using -Wl,shared.

Also, if anyone has any thoughts on bug  #280573 it would help.  It has 
a huge patch attached for the security vulnerabilities.
