splash is ok, the vga thing changes how the output is showed for you
during the boot, so yes it can 'break' stuff.

Btw, if we've a 'safe bet' and Otavio wants to change grub package a
bit (eg: we can preseed a debconf question through 'desktop' task in
the installer) to add it, i agree. Do you see?

Yep. a 'debconf' question has been proposed before by us. We have not
implemented it (yet).

Splashy .postinst (in debian) has the needed code (now commented out) to:
- find the resolution the user has, by reading from /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and/or /etc/X11/XFree86.conf
- write the proper vga= line in grub's menu.lst's defoption= line
- re-run update-grub

The problem is that this assumes the user is running grub. We can
attempt to find the known bootloader's config files, say:
/etc/lilo.conf, /etc/quik.conf, /boot/grub/menu.lst; and deal with
them in their own particular ways once the correct resolution has been
determined from the Xorg/XFree86 config file.

Another choice might be to add the ability to configure the boot
loader in splashy_config ( --grub, --lilo, --quik, etc ). And add the
ability to call splashy_config from a debconf question and/or a GUI
for splashy_config (which is in our roadmap for Splashy).

For now we chose not to do any of such configurations and assume the
user will read the README file and activate Splashy manually.
