Thanks everyone. I fixed the issue. There were two things. One was that I thought I had a newer version of alsa-base, but I had a lower version installed which does not check for udevfs installation (according to the changelog). Another issue was with the groups. The username I was using was not in audio group. Thanks everyone once again. Utopia really rocks!! -- Ramakrishnan
