Don't tell this to the majority of Ubuntu developers who are not
paid. They may start demanding their share. ;)

In fairness, it was not people in Ubuntu or Canonical who glossed them
over but the journalist. The journalist was wrong about a number of
other things in the article as well. Or should someone start inviting
DDs to jump ship every time the press mischaracterize something about
the Debian project?

No, they provide a quote from "Debian leader Bruce Perens."
