Actually nothing can be simpler than:

growisofs -Z /dev/dvd -J -R dirwithfilestoburn

Making a video DVD is a bit more work, but dvdauthor does most of the
work.

Good luck getting life that easy on windows (If I can't script it, it's
not easy enough yet).

I never had problems reading SD cards with my usb card reader from
linux.
