From my own POV, I'm too far from core D-I development (except l10n) nowadays to get a usefuul advice. When it comes at tasksel, I work in low maintenance mode. When obvious things pop up, and if I notice them, I usually apply fixes. The same stands when an upload is needed. However, when it comes at design issues, I consider that my own advice would be quite pointless and maybe even confusing. Sorry for not being very helpful here.
