The line of thought that you have been defending goes much further than
the simple technical decision IMO. And I'm not sure it's a position that
the whole project can stand behind without a GR.

I do. I know at least one person who expressed his intent to leave Debian
if Debian wasn't able to make the choice of systemd. So if one is ready to
resign, there will likely be other developers who are ready to start a GR.
