For comparison, I ran the same installer from the same 
debian-live-10.9.0-i386-cinnamon+nonfree.iso image copied to a USB stick, on the
i686 netbook with 512 MB RAM.  It installed OK, with no drama, and boots to the
cinnamon desktop now.
