Finally I have my ftp host up to potato..and just for yucks
I grabbed the cvs of apt again, and recompiled it.

But alas, this time I seem to be stymied by another critter..ie:

 rac2:/home/jwest/yacs# make potato_status
 Using the provided status file for potato ...
 rac2:/home/jwest/yacs#  make list COMPLETE=1 SIZELIMIT1=576716800
 Apt-get is updating his files ...
 E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct
 the problem. 
 make: *** [apt-update] Error 100

However, dpkg --configure -a does NOT resolve the problem, and 
apt-get check shows no errors ;-(

I can run apt-get (apt 0.3.11.1) update and upgrade successfully,

I have tried a few variations of moving the TDIR to other locations/disks
but with no change...curiously, with apt (0.3.11) I can run mirrorcheck
successfully.?!?  So I went back and built apt_0.3.11.1 again looking for 
errors that I may have missed....nope.

Does this sound familiar???  At this point I am a bit lost as to what to 
try next...
