That's not a task, it's a meta-package. The gnome desktop task
additionally has:
€ tasksel --task-packages gnome-desktop
epiphany-browser
openoffice.org-evolution
inkscape
xsane
gnome
openoffice.org-gnome
hal-cups-utils
iceweasel-gnome-support
gnome-accessibility
rarian-compat
gnome-desktop-environment
which brings quite a lot more things to install.

Now, that is more surprising, as a DVD should have plenty of space for

At least with the Beta1 DVD1, I'm getting "Graphical desktop
environment" in tasksel.
