Package: console-setup
Version: 1.49

See Debian bug report 558414 against console-tools for more information.

The init script for console-setup, /etc/init.d/console-setup, when invoked
during boot-up, does not respect the video mode selected by the boot
loader or the font selected by console-tools.

I see, said the blind man, as he fell through the open man hole.

   dpkg-reconfigure console-setup

did the trick. Everything is working as expected now.
