Comments/Problems:
On first attempt the onboard NIC was not recognised so I disabled it in BIOS
and installed a PCI ethernet card. This was recognised and the install went a
bit further.
Installation stopped at a screen headed
No disk drive was detected. If you know the driver needed by your disk drive,
you can select it from the list.
In order to see if there was an updated driver to be had I tried installing
with
64studio_2.1_amd64.iso
and debian-testing-amd64-CD-1.iso dated 16-6-2008
Both with results similar to the above.
I attach "hardware-summary" and "syslog" files from the last install attempt.

According to the nVidia people, this is an issue that should be solved in
2.6.25 kernels. Quoting them:

It would be good if you could confirm this by installing the 2.6.25 kernel
from unstable and booting that without the pci=nomsi option.
In the mean time I've reassigned your report to the kernel team and am now
closing it for the appropriate kernel version.
Note that the reassign means that I will not be receiving any follow-up
mails anymore unless a CC is added to either myself or the debian-boot
mailing list (the last is preferred).
