I suggest you try the "netboot" image from
http://people.debian.org/~aba/d-i/images/daily/

and more particularly
http://people.debian.org/~aba/d-i/images/daily/netboot/mini.iso

Please boot in "expert" mode and choose to install *unstable*, not
testing.

OK, I used the mini.iso and did a netboot. This worked flawless and Lenny is now installed and runs very well... Many thanks for your patience!!

I have two comments on the installation, which might help others further:
I installed Lenny on a pre-existing Ext3 partition (/dev/sda5) and used the existing swap. This got recognized by the installer but it claimed it failed to use this partition. After reconfirming the partition several times, I could enter the label for the partition. This was critical for the acceptance of the partition and the installation.

After the installation, GRUB had not correctly inserted the existing Debian Etch 64 in the menu.list. Grub pointed to /dev/sda8 which should have been /dev/sda7. I had to modify GRUB to make Debian Etch 64 bootable again.

For completion: my system is a Dell Inspiron AMD Turion64 X2 processor. It contains a 80GB harddisk which boots XP MCE, Debian Etch64 and now Lenny64.

Thank you for all your help and support!
Cheers,
Bart
